Round Four last week was a bit of a tough day across the board for our three teams with all sides going down convincingly. The Seniors were totally outclassed by their opposition while the Reserves played well, leading early but ran out of steam in the second half. The Women played their first night game since 2018. They fought gamely and showed tremendous character without much luck.
This week were were all grateful to get back on our oval after some extensive SE Water and Parks Victoria work on some underground pipes had us training up the road for the past 3 weeks and it will be great for the men’s teams to be playing back at home this Saturday while the women play away.
It was great again last week to see plenty of support at all 3 games with Stuart Shanks and Dan Stuart among the supporters in the crowd watching the Women’s game.
At the Men’s game, 1981 Reserves Best and Fairest Dave Clerehan whose 42 game career was cruelly cut down by injury, was on hand to wave the flags for the Reserves game. Life Member Mick Verberne blew the whistle and Archie Edwards ran the boundary. Plenty of support for the Men’s games as usual.
The Women ran out for their first night game since 2018 against Oakleigh at the newly renovated Scammell Reserve. It was a close tight tussle in the first quarter with neither side giving ground easily. It stayed close through the first half with Oakleigh taking a 3 goal lead into the break. It was much of the same after half time wil the girls missing out again despite a great, spirited effort
Best for the team were Grace Curran and Lauren Taylor supported by Anna Jones while Nikita Kalkman battled hard.
The Reserves jumped out of the blocks early going toe to toe with MHSOB in a very even high scoring first quarter. Jumping to a 2 goal lead halfway through the second term, the opposition lifted and the boys couldn’t go with them. It was close at the half but MHSOB lifted after the break to cruise away to an easy victory.
Clearly best player for the House was “Danger” Dan Stuart who played a great defensive game in the back half. Big Gun Power-Forward Dave Cameron dominated with 3 goals in another solid game while first gamer Mark O’Driscoll (2 goals) played well. David Blamey didn’t put a foot wrong all game while Mark Nicholson was strong around the packs. Declan Nannery returning from injury, also booted 2.
The Seniors went into their game against MHSOB very undermanned after a spate of injuries to many key players however the mood was positive as the boys ran out. MHSOB jumped out of the blocks with a solid first term and were never headed as they took out a very comfortable victory.
Brendan Wright was easily our best rucking all day while Travis Scotland worked hard around the ground, his fitness showing through. Heath Miller (2 goals) was strong at both ends of the ground while Joey Halloran and first gamer John Robinson were good.
Kevin O’Connell kicked 2 while Darra Conlon, Gordon Walker and Rob Dyer each kicked 1.
The coaches and teams have been working hard this week to prepare to play Glen Eira AT HOME while the Women’s team play the early game against Emmaus St Leo’s AWAY.
