Power House AFC Round 10, 2022

The Tide Turns

It was another big week at the club with the Seniors finally getting their first win on the board this season after a successful trip away to Manningham.

The Reserves were in it up to their eyeballs at 3/4 time but staggered late while the Women started off very strongly before fading late.

This week we have a big chance for victory in all games as we host another TRIPLE HEADER at HOME.

The Women take on ladder leaders Hampton at 9.20 while the Men’s Teams host Aquinas (Reserves @11.40 and Seniors @ 2.00pm) in two very winnable but challenging games.

ROUND 9 REVIEW

THE WOMEN fronted up at the Ross Gregory Oval again ready to take on new opposition in Whitefriars. This week, they started like a house on fire booting two goals in the first term to take a 9 point lead into the first break.

Grace Curran breaks away

The game quickly evened out in the second quarter as  we took a 1 point lead into the main break after Whitefriars kicked a goal after the siren.

Lisa McCombs kicks under pressure

We let the opposition slip away in the third term and went into the last term searching for the winning score but couldn’t convert. We eventually went down by 14 points.

Nat Stuart heads for a break

Our best player was Lisa McCombs who continues her stellar form in the ruck. Leanna Carroll was great while midfielders Cat Bartholomew and Anna Jones were strong. Britt Tancred (1 goal) up forward and Grainne Devane down back were great. Bhavna Patel also booted a goal.

Emma Doorley (L) and Anna Jones fight for the loose ball while Mikaela Verhoosel (R) comes to support

Another tough loss but more encouraging signs to look forward to.

A confident RESERVES took the field with great expectation against Manningham. After a slow scoreless first quarter, the game evened up by the half as the boys took a 6 point lead into the main break and were looking strong.

With Dave Canny, Mark Nicholson and Jamie Carroll looking the goods, the second half looked enticing.

The third quarter was a struggle as the boys worked hard to keep their opponents out of scoring range with the wind behind them. They were 21 points down at 3/4 time but they were coming home with a big wind advantage.

Unfortunately, the wind wasn’t enough as a crafty Manningham negated our forward attacks and scratched out a victory by 31 points.

Dan Buckley waits to make his move

Best for the House was the energetic Wilson Jones who dominated around the ground. Darragh Leonard through the midfield and Darra Conlon down back, were strong all day.

Dom Fogarty was his usual elusive self and Nick Easom flew in to play a rare game. Goals were shared between new key forward Dan Stuart, veteran running defender Darra Conlon, supercoach Traolach O’Sullivan and cagey, power forward and goalkicking machine Daniel Buckley. First gamer Matt Henry also kicked a late goal.

After a moving pre-game Indigenous Ceremony, THE SENIORS came out looking to improve on a recent form upswing and get some early runs on the board. Kicking with the wind, they managed some first quarter goals through Jeremy Hill (2) and Brendan Wright (2).

The second quarter was spent trying to negate the opposition and run the ball and at the half, there was only 4 points separating the sides.

Sean Scotland stands the mark

The third quarter opened and the boys played some of their best football of the year as they piled on 5 goals to 2 with shining light Jeremy Hill on fire and the Scotland brigade riding shotgun through the midfield.

Ruckman Ben Taylor taps to Daniel Stizza
The last quarter was a physical slog as two early goals to Manningham set the scene for an intense final 15 minutes. Big intercept marks from Luke Stubbs and swingman Jeremy Hill held the opposition at bay as Stuart Shanks, Heath Miller, Dave Blamey and Stephen Boland held sway in defence.

At the other end of the ground, big James Ditchfield clunked a couple of marks, laid a big tackle and booted a crucial goal. The midfield dug in and was tough in the clinches and every player lifted until the final siren.

The victory by two points was the club’s first senior win in 405 days and was celebrated with gusto by all involved.

Swingman Jeremy Hill was the absolute standout with 6 goals while playing at both ends of the ground while Sean Scotland continued his fine form through the middle. Heath Miller, Brett Scotland and Ben Circosta (1 goal)  were huge, while Brendan Wright booted two goals and ever reliable Kevin O’Connell got on the scoresheet.
