COVID-19 KEY FACTS
In times of uncertainty, every media outlet and social platform tries to weigh in on the discussion and the facts can get distorted. I have included key facts below to remember during this period:
- Wash your hands. One of the most reliable ways of avoiding contact with COVID-19 is by regularly washing your hands. Remember that hand sanitiser or warm soap and water are both equally effective in ensuring your hands are clean.
- Practice good respiratory etiquette. Remember to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your bent elbow when you cough or sneeze.
- Transmission only occurs within short distances. To contract COVID-19, you must be within 1-2 metres of someone and be in their presence for more than 15 minutes so be reminded to practice good social distancing
- 78% – 85% of people get COVID-19 from a family member. For this reason, if you have been to any of the affected countries, OR have travelled overseas in the past 14 days we ask that you remain away from training and events until you have passed 14 days quarantine. This is the same if your family or people you live with have travelled overseas also.
- 80% of people do not require hospitalisation to recover. Most people who pick up COVID-19 experience a mild strain of the virus and do not require hospitalisation.
- Average recovery time is approximately 2 weeks. Unless you have an underlying condition, COVID-19 will need time to pass through your system and the recovery time is just two weeks.
- The younger you are, the better your immune system can handle the virus. While COVID-19 can affect all ages, the elderly and those with underlying medical conditions are the most susceptible. It’s important to regularly wash your hands in order to protect yourself and others that may be more vulnerable.
- A vaccine is expected to be available in the next 6 -12 months.
It’s important we adhere to community standards and listen to our leaders and health authorities. It’s going to be a difficult few months but we have to work together to minimise risk through this pandemic.
Note: While Mainland China’s only locally transmitted new infections yesterday were in Wuhan, the wider Hubei province reported no new cases for 11 consecutive days. This is a reminder that COVID-19 can be contained if the right actions are taken.
We will keep you updated and lets work through this together.
