Last weekend was one of the great days down at the House. In the last Triple Header of the year the Women and Seniors had stirring wins while the Reserves pushed the undefeated top team all the way to the end.
The day also featured Past Players Day (including 1959 Premiership Reunion) AND the $1000 Draw later that night.
The Women took on Whitefriars who were top four going into last week. It was a really tight and hard fought contest in blustery conditions, the girls held Whitefriars to only 1 goal and managed to kick 2 themselves (Zara Treacy and Steph Bell).
Jordan Balfry was best on ground for the House in her last game before heading back to Ireland in her quest to become the 2019 Rose of Tralee.
The Reserves coughed up 6 goals in the first quarter against Melbourne High but then managed to keep them goalless for the rest of the game!
After getting a quarter time bake from the gaffer Traolach O’Sullivan, the boys responded and pushed the contest right to the final siren – eventually going down by 23 points.
This was a fair result as MSOB Reserves were 11-0 heading in to last weeks game!
Paddy McGovern was best afield with 2 goals, Brian Kyne was solid across the back and Matty Leonard played well in his 50th game.
Wearing the green heritage jumper to celebrate the 1959 Premiership reunion; the Seniors played inspired football!
After a tight first half the boys trailed by 4-points at the main break. In the next half the House managed to kick 5 goals to 0 to storm home with a win for the ages.
The crowded balcony cheered home every mark, kick, goal & tackle as the Power House boys were simply too good for a stunned MHSOB outfit.
Harry Phelan and Steve Devine were huge on the day, major goal kickers were Adam Collett with 3, with Brett Scotland and Ben Circosta kicking 2 each.
It certainly was was one of the great all round days at the House! For those who were lucky enough to be there, it’s something that they’ll remember for a long time!
1959 Premiership Reunion and Past Players Day
Last Saturday we celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the ‘Invincibles’ 1959 Premiership. There were many stories told by players from the day and a crowded house hung on their every word.
1959 Premiership Coach John Layton was one of the speakers on the day and spoke glowingly about his memories from that 1959 season, John even got down to the Seniors rooms at half time to give the boys a rev up!
There were many people to thank for putting together a great day, Peter Dakin was superb as the MC, Ian Dakin did a mountain of work in getting past players along to the day and Ian Hammet did a great job in putting together the history for the day.
Thanks also goes out to President Nic Pavlou and the Women’s team who assisted in the catering for the day.
