After a big pre-season the boys were looking forward to a big weeend of footy against our rivals UHS. Unfortunately the results didn’t go our way. The Reserves lacked a ruckman and key position players, if they had of kicked straight it may have been a different story, the Seniors also lacked a couple of key position players and were ultimately no match for a fired up UHS unit.

Here are the reports for Round 1:

Seniors Match Report:

The seniors needed a big start but unfortunately we were slow out of blocks, a limited pre-season for a number of players was showing. We worked out way into the game and the ball movement was good when we started getting hands on it. It will take a little while but new game plan is starting to take shape.

The forward line was presenting well all day with limited supply, Luke Stubbs pushed hard for possession and new player Eddie Nyary was crumbing well when the opportunity presented itself. The House played a strong second and third term but let ourselves down late in both quarters, the backline was under too much pressure as we were losing in midfield and in the last term we let it slip.

Dave Burnside tried hard all day and was among the better players, Rhys Gregory really stepped up across half back also. It was encouraging to see Ben Circosta play so well in his first game in PHAFC colours, Adam Collett led from the front all day too.

A special mention goes out to Ricky Webb who unfortunately broke his arm in the last 3o seconds of the game, Rick will be out for 6-8 weeks but as always will be a big part of the club during this time! We send Ricky our best wishes for a speedy recovery.

It’s a big game next week against La Trobe out at Bundoora, we will hopefully welcome back a couple of senior players – including Co-captain Ben Leske. It’ll be a big week on the track as we look to hit the winners list come round 2.

Reserves Match Report:

Some real positives came out of it, the boys played some great fast moving football and used the short inside kicks effectively, unfortunately UHS had us for speed in the back line and our delivery to the half forward and full forward line let us down. Belly was the leader the side needed and between Joel and Belly they controlled the backs well and moved the ball quickly out of our back half to give the forwards the best chance.

Although the score line doesn’t show this we were only a few accurate kicks and grabs short all day, and had we been more efficient we could have rolled them. We will need ALL of the midfield to run both ways next week, some speed in the back line and composure when delivering the ball to the forwards if we are going to take down the top teams this year.

A massive game from Dom and Coxy who were everywhere all game and new comer Andy Pryde was dangerous up front. Unlucky not to be in the votes were PO, Gerry and Jados who all contributed throughout the game.

The 2’s now play a well drilled La Trobe Uni team that beat them convincingly in the first Qualifying final last year, it will be interesting to see how much the boys have improved.
