D3 Reserves Grand Final - Player Profiles
Powerhouse's resident Journalist James "Hutchie" McCarthy (Best in the Business) offers a sneak preview of the players involved in next weekends D3 Reserves grand final against Bentleigh
Paddy ‘vice captain’ Barrett
Mr. Consistent. Ever present in the back pocket all year, he provides plenty of run from the backline and doesn’t shirk in the physical stakes. An Irish import since 2006, he is also vice-captain.
Dave ‘cockshow’ Maloney
A rock at full back, strong and aggressive, he is rarely beaten. No better man to put on a ‘show’ off the field, but he does so on the filed also and a great leader down back. Bar Manager, very important to be his friend.
Anthony ‘The Unit’ Willis
Evergreen 34-year old can turn on a 10c piece and dance his way through traffic. Also very hard at the pill and provides plenty of run, on field and to the bookies. Friday night routine: A few pints in the Irish Times… it won’t change.
Sammy ‘Dogga’ Watson
Enormous engine and will to win, the Dogga is a good wingman for his fellow defenders on dance floors as well as footy ovals. Matches desire with plenty of skill at halfback. Among the best in his last 3 games, the Dogga is on fire.
Roderick ‘Rocket’ Marshall
The spiritual on-field leader. Legend of the club with over 200 games, Rocket is lethal under a high ball and has controlled his temperament somewhat this year. Played in a losing GF in 2000 and missed through suspension in 06, the Rocket will be giving his all to win that elusive Flag. Also hates lots of things.
Matt ‘T-Bone’ Treeby
Massive inclusion on the halfback flank in the 2nd half of the season. Not a man for preseason, Matt has all the skills and a laser guided kick, has been a rock in the backline and doesn’t take a backward step on the field.
Jade ‘Captain Luigi’ Fiorini
Former Ressies B&F, Jados is known for his off field style (not!) and his on field footballing ability. Will run all day especially if there are some pies on offer, a tough competitor with a raking kick. He is club captain and well known for his relentlessness, shoots straight, be it with the footie or his hair.
Warde ‘I’m Angry’ Elliott
40-year-old player coach, Wardie defies logic with his fitness, energy and hardness at the pill. You are in trouble when the forehead vein is visible but has a calmness and a way with words that has galvanised this team. Inspirational player and coach, anyone would want to win for him.
Brian ‘Goodesy / Kynie’ Kyne
Arrived with Paddy in ’06 also, the stylish Gaelic footballer turned Aussie rules player has a huge engine and bags of pace. Is also hard at it and has silky skills, but is also injury prone. Missed all of ‘07 but has managed the body well this year and is a vital player this Saturday.
Marshall ‘Marshy’ Bull
Arrived with old brother Nick half way through 09, the fact that he finished runner up in the B&F in 6 games says it all really. Very accurate kick, strong in the air and at ground level; he can win a game on his own and will hopefully be firing on all cylinders on Saturday.
Drew ‘I’ve got lesbian friends’ Ashworth
Has given his all to the club in his 1st year even when frustrated by injury at the start of the year. The main target man at centre half forward he is strong overhead and can kick goals. Has plenty of premierships from his London days and has even played Gaelic Football but he wants an Australian premiership to add to the collection.
Chris ‘Moz’ Moran
Small forward/onballer with bags of energy, heart and skill. May miss the big one after breaking his hand in the Prelim and if so there will be no greater reason to win it for him as he is a big reason we are there. Tragic if he misses out.
Matt ‘Wally’ Wallis
Small forward with frightening pace, he bags goals in the same mould as Stevie Milne. A player of senior quality, the Wal will be hoping for a bagful on the weekend. We all do. Some claim to have seen him handball backwards.
Marty ‘The Sceintist’ Leahy
Full forward maestro who has huge strength in the marking contest which he uses instead of height to get the marks. Also hugely skilful with the sherrin and is as quick as anyone over 5 metres (but not 10!) Need him to be firing on Saturday.
Micky ‘Secretary’ Verberne
Club veteran who is hugely respected around the club, Micky has got the body and the nose back on track this year to put in some outstanding performances in the games that really matter. A vital goalscorer also.
Ryan ‘Big Rhino’ Anderson
6’7” ruckman, young Ryan is still learning the game but is a superb tap ruckman and has super fitness to get round the ground. Also competes well at ground level for a huge man. Another who must fire up like never before to get a win this Saturday.
Chris ‘Plazza’ Plazzer
The joker of the squad but the long time club servant was a premiership player in 2006 and is as hard at the pill as anyone and will run all day. His oranges are the talk of ’09 and when he is switched on, can be a match winner.
Russ ‘Cucumber’ MacUmber
2009 B&F tells the story of his year. Superb in tight, he wins ball he has no right to, tackles and runs hard and hits targets. Loves the duf duf tunes and has been the foundation of the team this year.
James ‘Hutchie’ McCarthy
Completed the triolgy of Irish recruites in 2006, Macca is a tenacious wingman who has left many an opponent in his wake both on and off the field! Unfortunate to have struggled with injury over the 4 years but a new fitness regime has seen him excel at the right time of the year.
James ‘Jimmy’ Riley
Arrived with T-Bone in mid season in somewhat better shape than the former and has shown his silky kicking skills and plenty of aggression in the half forward line despite his laid back attitude off the track. Rumoured to be sponsored by addidas.
Mark ‘Chocko’ Spiliotalopoulos
Another to arrive with T, Chocko has been a revelation in the latter half of the year. What he lacks in height he makes up for in speed and skill, bounces at will and runs at the opposition causing pandemonium in opposition defences. Also kicks goals and he will be one to watch on Saturday. Don’t try to pronounce his name.
Fergal ‘Cut Snake’ Crossan
The new Irish recruit from Co. Derry has played Gaelic Football at the height level and it shows. A body fat count of 0, he is as tough as nails and takes on opposition players and rarely gets caught, just brushing them off. Also goes well kicking the oval ball. A word of warning to the opposition, do not cross Crossan.
Andy ‘Scooter’ Boughan
Bags and bags of endeavour, the Bough’s improvement this year has been fantastic. Does all that is asked of him and more… except get rid of the scooter. Invaluable backup ruckman in a number of games.
Aaron ‘Aza’ Miller
The Kiwi has been fantastic all year in his first year playing Aussie Rules on the wing. Obviously loves the physical side and is good in the tackle and in close, hampered midseason by a troublesome knee. Also loves fush and chups.
Johnny ‘JB’ Brennan
Another fiercely competitive Irishman, Johnny B is at home in the forward pocket and ducks and weaves out of trouble on the pitch and in the Quiet Man pub. Can sear a sideways kick 6 feet off the ground and is seeking the services of an interpreter for 2010.
Jason ‘Scratcher’ ‘The Pres’ Nicholls
Club president and senior 2006 premiership player, Scratch has a terrific accurate kick. Fellow defenders may argue about accountability at times but having had knee reco in 2007, Scratch is a valuable asset in training and what he does for the club as President.
Simon ‘Pinky’ Nolan
A career in commentary is in sight for the man who can talk the ear off the opposition and his own defence. Has struggled with his knee all year but is a great man to consolidate and has contributed when required in 09.
Gerry ‘Big Red’ Cleary
Has made the conversion from Soccer goalkeeper to Rules look very easy indeed in the ruck. Has been a valuable asset in the ruck at times this year as well as in the bar. Huge engine for a big man, never gives up – only on Mondays.
Neil ‘Toddy’ Todd
Achieved his goal of playing his 1st game of Australian Rules football in 2009. A valuable contributor in the jobs department, he will be aiming to make a big impact in 2010 on the back of a full preseason.
Jeremy ‘Jezzalenko’ Plazzer
Younger brother of Chris, the Jez has had his best session to date this year, culminating in a hanger in front of the clubhouse in the home and away season. A huge contributor in a panel of 30 players in 2009.
Steve ‘Bread and Butter’ Batten
The 19 year old plays the game like a guy 5 years his senior. A delightful right foot kick with silky skills, Stevie has been a fantastic contributor all year and we all hope to see him back at the club in 2010 where he can become a senior player if he wants to.
