Vale - Les Gordon

Les at Camp in 1957

It is with great sadness that the Power House Amateur Football Club announces the passing of one of its true greats, Life Member and Club Legend Les Gordon.

Les' first game in 1952 was in the Power House Under 19s at the invitation of his childhood mate Leigh "Curley" Grant. From then until 1971, he played a remarkable 357 games for the Green White and Black – a club record that still stands today - 42 years after his retirement.

His toughness was legendary. He played an incredible 252 games consecutively and didn't miss a single training session for 19 years.

Les was famous for once stating that "I only knew two things, to go to work and play football".

Throughout his football playing career, he enjoyed the unwavering support of his horse loving father Jock (dec.) and first wife Beryl (dec.).

One of the all-time champions of the Club, Les was a 4 time Senior Best and Fairest winner in 1960, 1961, 1962 and 1964. When playing in the Reserves for one year because of work commitments, he won both the Club and VAFA Best and Fairest award.

He was Senior Captain in 1962, 1963, 1964 and 1971.

He was also Senior Coach for 6 seasons from 1966-1969 and 1971-1972

Les was a two time Premiership player - a member of the 1959 Invincibles Premiership Team and Captain-Coach of the 1971 Premiership Team. It was his last game as a player.

Les was also a member of the select VAFA 300 Game Club.

In an emotional ceremony in 2011, Les was elevated to LEGEND status of the Power House Football Club.

Due to his work commitments, Les attended Big Camp only once in 1952 in John "Tank" Dillon's Tavern.

Many Slushees who went through Big Camp were given work and life opportunities through Les's generosity and desire to give people a start in life.

Through his company LU Simon, Les was a great supporter of the Club, support that has continued until the present day.

He was a great tennis player and talented sportsman.

Les was a keen golfer who played his last round only a few days before he died. He was a member of Yarra Yarra Golf Club.

He was a keen horseracing enthusiast who owned and raced many winners.

He was a great man, a great footballer, a great leader and a great bloke.

Les Gordon will always be remembered as a Legend of the Power House Football Club

Les is survived by his wife Elgin and three sons Russell, Craig and Darren.
